What is a toilet cabin?

A toilet cabin is a portable building with flushing toilets and hand basins inside. It is delivered by lorry, set on a level base, and either plumbed into mains water and drainage or run from tanks.

You will also hear it called a toilet block, a site toilet block or a portable cabin with toilet. Where a portaloo is a single chemical cubicle, a cabin gives a crew proper toilets under one roof, with lighting and somewhere to wash their hands, and on the larger layouts, separate male and female sides.

That makes it the step up for sites with a bigger crew, jobs that run for months, and places where people expect something closer to an indoor washroom, such as schools, offices and yards during a refurbishment. Toilet Hire Near Me is a broker: we match your job to a supplier in our network with the right cabin free, then organise delivery, servicing and collection.

Inside a typical toilet cabin

  • Flushing toilets in lockable cubicles
  • Hand basins, with hot water on many models
  • Lighting and ventilation
  • Urinals on the male side of larger blocks
  • Tough steel shell built for site use

Fittings vary by model and supplier. If you need something specific, such as hot water, heating or a set footprint, tell us and we will confirm it before you book.

Toilet cabin layouts, from single to 4+2

Toilet blocks are described by their cubicles. On a 2+1, for example, the male side has two toilets and urinals, and the female side has one. Bigger crews need more cubicles, and mixed crews need separate sides.

The crew sizes here are a rough guide based on HSE workplace toilet figures. Shift patterns, breaks and visitors all change the numbers, so we check every layout against your site before quoting. Not sure which you need? Try the cabin chooser below.

What a toilet cabin needs on site

A cabin is a building, not a cubicle, so a little planning before delivery makes the day go smoothly. Run through these five points and tell us anything unusual when you ask for a quote.

If the cabin needs to go on a pavement or road rather than inside your site, check with the local council first, as permission is usually needed for anything placed on the highway.

Site welfare rules are set out in CDM 2015. Our site welfare compliance checklist and site toilet ratio guide cover what your site needs.

  • A level, firm base. Hardstanding, compacted ground or sleepers. Cabins cannot sit on soft or sloping ground.
  • Room to deliver. Most cabins arrive on a lorry with a lifting arm, so it needs a clear route, space to unload and no low wires overhead.
  • Water and drainage, or tanks. Connect to mains for no emptying at all, or run from fresh and waste tanks on a service schedule.
  • Power. For lighting, plus heating and hot water where fitted, from a site supply or a generator.
  • Close to the work. Near the compound or welfare area, with a safe walking route that stays clear of plant.

Toilet cabin hire FAQs

What is a toilet cabin?

A toilet cabin is a portable building with flushing toilets and hand basins inside, delivered to site on a lorry and either connected to mains water and drainage or run from tanks. It is also called a toilet block, site toilet block or portable cabin with toilet. It suits bigger crews and longer jobs better than individual portaloos.

How much does toilet cabin hire cost?

Toilet cabins are priced per job, because the cost depends on the layout, how long you need it, how it connects to water and drainage, and delivery to your site. Send us your postcode, crew size and dates and we will come back with a clear price. For comparison, a standard site portaloo is £36 a week and a welfare unit starts at £200 a week.

Should I hire a toilet cabin or portaloos?

For a small crew or a job of a few weeks, portaloos are usually simpler and cheaper. A toilet cabin makes more sense when you have a larger crew, need separate male and female toilets, want flushing toilets and proper hand basins, or the job runs for months.

Does a toilet cabin need mains water and drainage?

Not always. A mains-connected cabin is plumbed into the site water supply and drainage, so there is no tank to empty. Where there is no connection, a cabin can run from a fresh water tank and a waste tank that are emptied on a schedule. Tell us what your site has and we will match the right setup.

Does a toilet cabin need electricity?

Most cabins need power for lighting, and for heating and hot water where fitted. That can come from a site supply or a generator. If you have no power on site, tell us when you ask for a quote.

How is a toilet cabin delivered?

Cabins usually arrive on a lorry with a lifting arm, which places the cabin on a level, firm base. The lorry needs a clear route in and room to unload, so tell us about narrow access, low wires, gates or soft ground before delivery.

What toilet cabin layouts can I hire?

Common layouts run from a single toilet cabin up to a 4+2 toilet block, with separate male and female sides on the larger units. The cabin chooser on this page gives a starting point, and we confirm the layout and footprint with your quote.

Can I add an accessible toilet or showers?

Yes. We can add an accessible site toilet at £100 a week, and temporary showers where the site has a water supply, all on the same quote.

Which areas do you cover?

We arrange toilet cabin hire across the south of England and South Wales, including London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Essex and Hertfordshire. See all locations.
